EdD-LOC Students to Embark on First-Ever Global Mission Trip to Costa Rica
A milestone opportunity for students to integrate leadership, service, and professional expertise through immersive global engagement.
Students in Baylor University’s online EdD in Learning and Organizational Change (EdD-LOC) program will soon have the opportunity to extend their leadership and service beyond the virtual classroom. This inaugural trip marks a new chapter for the EdD-LOC program, expanding its reach and reaffirming its commitment to preparing leaders who serve with vision and integrity.
From April 23-28, 2026, a team of select EdD-LOC students will travel to San José, Costa Rica, for the program’s first-ever mission trip. The experience is designed to integrate students’ unique professional expertise with hands-on service opportunities, reflecting Baylor’s strategic commitment to transformational education and global engagement as outlined in the University’s In Deeds strategic plan.
“This trip is a unique opportunity for students to live out the mission of Baylor and lead with integrity, serve with humility, and make a meaningful impact.” – Dr. Leanne Howell, Faculty Co-Leader
Serving with Purpose
While in Costa Rica, students will partner with One More Child (OMC), a Christ-centered nonprofit serving vulnerable children and struggling families. The team will also work with Transforma, a local organization focused on restoring dignity to mothers & families in extreme poverty through holistic sustainable development.
“Our students bring a wealth of experience to the table. This is a chance to use those skills in a way that strengthens communities and builds lasting relationships.” – Dr. Laila Sanguras, Faculty Co-Leader
Students will also lead professional seminars that draw from their diverse backgrounds and experiences to offer practical insights and supports for family members and/or leaders in the community.
Building Community and Perspective
Beyond the service work, the trip is designed to foster deeper connections among students, with faculty, and within the Costa Rican community. Through shared experiences and collaborative learning, students will gain new perspectives on leadership and community engagement.
Applications are open through November 19, 2025, with priority consideration given to those who apply by November 12th. All EdD-LOC students who will be enrolled during the Spring 2026 Trimester are eligible to apply, space permitting.
Questions about the trip can be directed to either faculty co-directors: Dr. Leanne Howell and Dr. Laila Sanguras.
