Baylor University's Moody School of Education has launched a fully online Graduate Certificate in Learning Design and Technology to address a growing national shortage of professionals skilled in creating digital instructional environments.

The 12-credit-hour program is designed for working professionals seeking an accelerated credential in instructional design. It can be completed in as few as four months.

What Is Learning Design and Technology?

Learning design and technology, commonly abbreviated LDT, is the practice of applying cognitive and behavioral learning theories to build educational experiences through digital platforms. That work encompasses online courses, interactive training modules, simulations and the systems that power modern classrooms and corporate environments.

While the discipline has long been rooted in higher education, the rapid adoption of remote and hybrid operations has driven demand for these skills well beyond campus. Organizations across healthcare, government, corporate and nonprofit sectors are now competing for qualified LDT professionals, and those who master instructional design, digital media development and technology integration are increasingly positioned for leadership roles. Demand significantly outpaces available workforce supply.

A Fast Track for Working Professionals

The four-course curriculum can be completed in four to eight months depending on a student's pacing needs, and requires neither relocation nor a career pause. Because the program emphasizes immediate workplace application, students can integrate new skills into their current roles while they study. Coursework is structured around project-based learning rather than deferred application.

By the time students finish, they have compiled a professional portfolio demonstrating applied competency in assessment, evaluation and learning intervention design. Students in Baylor's online programs have reported career advancement before completing the certificate.

What the Curriculum Covers

Students gain hands-on experience with multimedia authoring tools, learning management systems and established instructional design frameworks such as ADDIE and SAM. Foundational learning theory runs throughout the coursework, as do the assessment and evaluation skills needed to measure whether a learning intervention is working and refine it when it isn't.

Career opportunities for LDT graduates span a wide range of industries, including corporate training and development management, healthcare staff onboarding and patient education, government and military curriculum development, nonprofit digital outreach coordination and higher education course design.

Why Baylor's Moody School of Education

The university's R1 research designation, recognized by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, further underscores the academic rigor of the credential.

Students receive access to faculty advising, the Graduate Academic Success Center, and the Baylor Career Center and alumni network, all within a fully online format.

Who Should Apply

The certificate is built for working professionals, including educators, training specialists, human resources managers and subject matter experts, who are ready to take a larger role in their organization's digital learning operations but are not looking to pause their careers for a multi-year graduate degree.

The Graduate Certificate in Learning Design and Technology is currently accepting applications. Additional information on curriculum requirements and admission criteria is available through the Moody School of Education.
